Taj Kumarakom Resort & Spa, Kerala

Our recent stay at Taj Kumarakom was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and hospitality of the entire team made us feel at home. A special mention to Ajay, who kept the kids entertained with his creative balloon animals — small gestures like these really make a family vacation memorable. The lifeguard Vishnu was always attentive and friendly, ensuring the pool area was safe and enjoyable for everyone. The food was exceptional. Chef Subin and his team curated delicious meals that blended traditional Kerala flavors with modern touches. Every dish, from breakfast to dinner, felt thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. Our room was spacious, elegant, and offered a perfect lagoon view, creating a calm and serene atmosphere. The Chayakada experience was another highlight — sipping fresh chai and enjoying local snacks by the water was pure bliss. What stood out most was the genuine care and attentiveness of the staff. Every interaction reflected the Taj hospitality that makes you want to come back again and again. Thank you, Team Taj Kumarakom, for a truly memorable stay. I am really struggling to rate this hotel. I really wanted to give it a 5 star but there are holes. I think the Google rating of 4.4 best describes the property. For a 5 star hotel that charged me about $400, they fell short in some areas. So lets start with the property. It is very pretty and historic. Gives you a sense of connecting with history. That said, they could have done a better job. It looks dated. I can see old and historic items in the room but a cheap toilet plastic toilet seat that didnt fully cover the toilet bowl! Really Taj? The walkways are old and could use some cleaning. Now to the good part. The service is excellent. Special shout out to Priya, Ajay, and Execute Chef Subin. They made our stay special. The evening tea before sunset was a nice touch.

Resort is ok. Not huge . Major plus is the view of the vembanad lake. Sitting by the lake in the evening is really awesome. Few rooms are old as it's an old bungalow of the British era. Initial room that we stayed had wooden floors that creaked on walking over them. Had a closet like those in old movies from where boogeyman can come. The second room was a bit modern as it was away from the bungalow. They have a daily classical dance performances which was awesome. But if you are spending more than 3 days here then the dance performances will look repetitive. They also organise high tea during the evening which feels awesome as you can sip some great tea or coffee and view the sunset on the shores of Lake vembanad.

We enjoyed our time at Taj. For the price I’m not completely sold, starting to feel like they’re resting on their laurels a bit. We were visiting some friends and only stayed for one night though our friends were there for 3. Pros: - Rooms: private, very clean, decent towels/linens (though a small stain on the bedsheet and slightly older mattress) - Transportation around: resort offers bikes and buggys to carry your suitcases around and get places fast. They were also happy to arrange a boat tour for us which was very fun! - Checkin/welcome: a very easy checkin process, they were able to place us next to our friends and welcomed us with very tasty pineapple juice - Activities/facilities: Yoga in the morning by the wellness center was great, clean pool! Improvement areas: - Poolside/food service: everything moves a bit slower on vacation but the first day we waited about an hour for fries by the pool and had to have them delivered to our room instead since it was so slow. Other meals were also “order at least 30 mins before you’re hungry” which isn’t necessarily intuitive for folks so be prepared (at least it’s fresh?). - Bugs: they’re everywhere but the many pools of standing water around the resort are hot beds for mosquitos. January is not peak season by any means but the outdoor restaurant (indoor was full) in the evening tried to sit us right next to the lagoon and we were almost eaten alive. Would recommend filling the pond with fish to eat the larva or having some more water fountains to keep things moving? - Bathroom netting: at Taj you have outdoor bathrooms in the bungalows, this was very cool and fun until we realized our bungalow (Sunbird) didn’t have a proper mosquito net on the roof, just some netting to keep leafs and twigs out but all the bugs flew right through the giant holes.

My stay at Taj Kumarakom Resort & Spa, Kerala was truly memorable and deeply calming. Set along serene backwaters, the property beautifully blends heritage and nature, with the historic Baker’s Bungalow, established in 1877, adding timeless charm. The overall ambience is peaceful, elegant, and thoughtfully maintained. The lake and lagoon views are breathtaking, especially during mornings and evenings, when still waters reflect lush greenery. I genuinely enjoyed every moment spent within the property, whether walking around the grounds or relaxing by the water. The staff across the resort were warm, courteous, and consistently attentive, which elevated the entire experience. Service was smooth, prompt, and delivered with genuine hospitality. A special mention goes to Girish from the housekeeping team, who provided exceptional service during our stay. His attention to detail, politeness, and sincere care for our comfort truly stood out. The room was always perfectly maintained, and his efforts made us feel valued and at home. I would highly recommend Girish for his outstanding work and dedication. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and Taj Kumarakom exceeded expectations in every way. I would happily return and recommend this property to anyone seeking relaxation, heritage, and heartfelt service, and unforgettable Kerala backwater hospitality.
